The latter marshalls econometric evidence in support of the proposition that ‘the growth of the middle class has in fact been a major source of the growth of government in the developed world over the last fifty years’ (Peltzman, 1980, p. 285). He hypothesizes that the key factor is that the middle classes are better ‘capable of articulating demands’ (i.e., bringing political pressure to bear), but he offers 10 evidence in support of this hypothesis.
